The Shad Plank: Will McCain call Obama's Webb and raise him a Cantor?
With so much attention focused on Sen. Jim Webb's chances of running for veep alongside Barack Obama recently, it's been easy to overlook (how's that for a confession?) that another Virginian has been generating a lot of veep buzz on the red side of the street.
U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor has been showing up in headlines more frequently, raising money quite successfully, and in general doing a fine job in the role of GOP rising star. And his name has been mentioned with increasing frequency as a possible running mate for John McCain.
"Young House star is just the ticket for John," reads the headline in today's New York Post (here's a link), atop a column by Charles Hurt (h/t Bearing Drift).
"The fourth-highest-ranking Republican in the House, Cantor is credited with some of the Republicans' more sensible legislative efforts, such as applying market-based reforms to government programs and clamping down on the willy-nilly issuing of driver's licenses that gave cover to the 9/11 terrorists for so long," Hurt writes.
Nor does it hurt that Cantor is a Virginian, as it seems that Obama is taking very seriously his chances of winning the Old Dominion come November -- which would make him the first Dem to carry the state since LBJ.
Obama announced today, in fact, that Mitch Stewart will be stepping in as Obama's Virginia state campaign director. While not a familiar name to most Virginians, Stewart has played a key role in Obama's effort thus far, having served as Obama's Iowa caucus director and Indiana state director. (Look for Stewart, but not Obama, at the convention.)
As the Weekly Standard points out (again, thanks to Bearing Drift), "Cantor's attractiveness as a running mate has increased now that Virginia has emerged as a tossup state. He would give McCain a major boost, probably enough to win Virginia handily."
